Effusive and effervescent
We secrete crystalline sweetness
An overabundant affection
That dulls the senses
And fills the heart with confections
Made of jittery pretenses.
If taken too far,
Saccharin makes metastases
Out of our molehills
And causes even the strongest stomach
To require charcoal pills.
The irresistible cringe
Following the saccharin high
Blends a wince, endorphins, and shame.
And at the last, that metallic tinge of regret
Reminds us that we went too far
And how far back down we now have to get.
